Program Note
Trapped between moving forward and continuing her studies and thus jumpstarting her adulthood and remaining safe and secure in her childhood, Ofka is feeling smothered. She works at a convenience store on the night shift, and lives vicariously through her regular customers. After her boyfriend dumps her, she is particularly self-absorbed and then the store is robbed. With the help of her odd friend Ubr, who is hopelessly in love with her, Ofka consciously shakes herself out of her torpor and starts to live. Michaela Pavlatova’s intimate portrait is a coming-of-age of sorts, where the young woman at the center of the story is past the point of childhood, but simply refuses to move ahead. Her acceptance of this is symbolized most affectingly by her physical move away from her safe childhood home in Prague’s mesmerizing Karlin district.
