Program Note
Young Waldemar is preparing to leave his small hometown in Poland and strike out for the West-as embodied by Vienna-and his planning takes him to see his neighbor, Mr. Kuka. He goes to him asking for advice and tips on how to behave and what to confront in “The Golden West.” Not only are Kuka’s recommendations all useless, he secretly sets up Waldemar to be a mule for a contraband gem, and puts him within the sights of assorted odd characters that drag him into one misadventure after another. Fortunately, Waldemar’s innate naivety and curiosity guide and protect him in his quest for knowledge. Based on the bestselling novel by Radek Knapp, Mr. Kuka’s Advice chronicles Waldemar’s bizarre, humorous, eye-opening journey from a small town in Poland to Vienna and from youth to adulthood.
