Program Note
At the heart of Garrel’s vaguely supernatural love triangle are Carole, an unhappy movie star, her negligent husband Ed, and photographer Francois, who becomes her lover. When their affair is discovered, Carole spirals into madness and finally commits suicide. A year later, Francois has moved on and is about to get married when he begins having visions of Carole. Frontier of Dawn has many themes threaded through its New Wave-esque black and white images: Ghosts of the past overshadowing the present and sadness of insanity affecting relationships among them. Garrel’s characters have characteristically been haunted ones, and here that manifests itself literally. While Francois toys with the idea of joining Carole in death, the images serve to remind that no one who follows Carole will live up to her, and though she may be a ghost of the past, she is very much part of Francois’ life.
