Program Note
As a follow-up to her award-winning short film Salam, El Bouhati returns to explore displacement and identity in her first feature film. A young, happy girl Sofia, born in France to Moroccan parents finds herself on a farm in North Africa when her father decides to go home. She quickly decides that when the time is right, she is returning to France and the freedoms and privileges she feels are hers by birthright. Jettisoning the tropes that involve poor parents, and miserable childhoods, the film places Sofia squarely in the middle class confronted with a choice that comes down to personal identity: She, like her parents, wants to return to her “home.” El Bouhati asks us what comprises “nationality” and how to reconcile the seemingly conflicting ideals of ethnicity and citizenship, and if it is possible to live in the limbo between the two.
