The concept of pretending takes a turn for the satirical in Lionel Baier’s tale of Francois and his double life as a film critic. After relocating to the country with his girlfriend Christine, he takes a job at a weekly lifestyle magazine that requires him to review the films running at the local cinema, even though he knows nothing about the subject. He opts to steal reviews from a highbrow culture journal, but he develops an honest passion for film. On a press trip to Lausanne he meets Rosa, a respected writer, and an unconventional relationship blossoms between them. Francois’ new sense of professional and erotic pleasure threatens to completely abolish who he is. The need to please and be accepted is at the root of both Francois’ lies, and Baier’s comedy, a subtle jab at the duality of public life and the ability for power to seduce.
