Program Note
Once again exploring the nature of truth and reality, this time learned ones. Atom Egoyan crafts a vivid and challenging pseudo-mystery about the power of the idea. For a class assignment, high school student Simon insinuates himself into the news story about a man who plants a bomb in his pregnant girlfriend’s luggage. Supplanting his dead parents with those in the story, his experiment leads to falsehoods and misplaced beliefs that raise alarm bells in an oversensitive community and beyond. Utilizing, as well as questioning, the capacity of the Internet to “create” lives, Egoyan studies the after-effects with images culled from phones, web, and gracefully illuminated staged sequences. Like the director’s The Sweet Hereafter, Adoration is an insightful film that spans the personal as well as the political.
