Program Note
Grief hovers over a Christmas gathering by a family as it deals with impending death and long-buried secrets. At the center is a mother, Junon, and son, Henri, the former who conceived the latter in order to find a bone marrow match for another son. Though the child died, Henri remains, now a bitter alcoholic completely estranged from his family. Loaded with so-called shocking moments, the Bergman-esque film lays its dysfunction bare, thereby deflating the power of shock. What is left is intensely realized relational drama that resonates in its acidity and, strangely, tenderness. Allowing naturalism to clash with a highly stylized and unconventional format, the film is an emotionally challenging one that does not allow for complete closure, but is one that truly reflects family dynamics
