Director Claire Denis returns with one of the most accessible, characteristically incisive films of her career. A widowed man, Lionel, and his daughter Josephine, are at the center of a larger story about a group of France’s working class. Lionel has raised Josephine on his own, and the two are as devoted to each other as anyone could be. But they reach the point where it’s time to live for themselves; Josephine has attracted the attention of a charming cab driver, and Lionel has also caught the eye of a middle-aged woman. Their futures rely on them confronting their joint past, as well as coming to an understanding of their present. Typical of Denis, the world the characters inhabit is a vivid one that crystallizes the characters’ place in the world and where they are in their lives.
