Program Note
Julia is a woman with a perfect life: She’s happily married, her career is stable, and she lives in a beautiful home. In a flash, however, that all ends when her mother is diagnosed with terminal cancer. As her family starts to fray around her, her father becomes needy, her husband grows distant, her sister is wrapped up in a personal scandal. Julia is forced to cope on her own. Through a combination of laughter, suffering, and acceptance, Julia matures into a new kind of fully realized adult. Director Malgos´ ka Szumowska’s second feature treads the ground where chaos and disorder define our lives, and the road to maturity can only be found through pain. A poetic and subtly powerful piece of filmmaking about one woman’s transition from comfortable complacency to sophisticated wisdom, loosely based on Szumowska’s own experiences.
