Program Note
In January 2000, the Supreme Court ruled that the ‘railroad union’s practice of indirect election’ is unconstitutional. The ruling was the beginning of the end for the union, which had been patronized by the government for 53 years. The film reveals the actions of the union, which had been remorselessly violating the rights of the workers, including the union’s signing an agreement to fire over 4000 of its members. The film depicts the struggles of the union members to democratically elect their own union president and to establish an independent labor union which will be able to represent the true voice of the workers against the government’s plans of placing the railroad under private management. The director, who has been making films about the lives and the struggles of the workers, shows her consummate skills in depicting the solidarity of the union members. (Hong Hyosook)
