The film is set in Patagonia, a remote corner of Argentina, near the end of the 19th century. At that time, the so-called ‘Conquest of the Desert’, a violent campaign designed to clean the aboriginal took place. The Danish general Gunnar arrives with his 15-year-old daughter, Ingeborg. When Ingeborg falls in love with a young soldier and runs off with him, Gunnar chases them alone into the land of his enemies. As he continues his lonely pursuit, the film leads us into a mysterious space that is untainted and unaffected by either past or future. For his breathtaking film Jauja, Lisandro Alonso has worked with professional actors for the first time and seems to employ the conventional narrative style. However, narrative logic, genre conventions and barren landscapes from Hollywood western films have been given whole new meanings and create a new type of space where reality and fantasy as well as present and past co-exist in a bizarre yet fascinating way. It is worth noting that Viggo Mortensen also takes a new step forward, which is in line with his recent effort to expand his career. The film won the FIPRESCI Award in Un Certain Regard of Cannes Film Festival. (Jin PARK)
