After taking a leave of absence for depression, Sandra finds it hard to return to work. Her superiors seduce her co-workers into accepting Sandra’s imminent dismissal by giving them bonuses. Over the weekend, she goes door-to-door, asking her co-workers to renounce their bonuses so that the employers will have the money to re-employ her. Beginning with Marion Cotillard’s close-up and ending with her slowly disappearing; the film is a new feature by the Dardenne brothers, who have often scrutinized the dark side of capitalism. It is most notable that the problem of choice is transferred over to the audience as the film progresses. Would I give up my bonus if taking it means someone else will lose his job? Different circumstances show that the answer to this question is not as easy as it seems. In the end, we are outraged at the real culprit who produces such a dilemma in the first place. A biting criticism about the evils of modern capitalism, this is a masterpiece showcasing Cotillard’s enthusiastic performance and charm. (RHEE Soue-won)
