In 2008, mysterious smoke blankets the sky above Buenos Aires and suddenly clears. Soon afterward, the locksmith Sebastian finds he has the supernatural power of knowing secret worries of those whose locks he has repaired. Sebastian then begins to meddle in other people’s lives. While repairing a lock in a house, he becomes aware that its housekeeper, Daisy, is an attempted thief. Daisy is then kicked out, and Sebastian takes her home with him. Lock Charmer is the second feature by Natalia Smirnoff, who made her debut with Puzzle(2009), first screened in Competition at the 2010 Berlin International Film Festival. Lock Charmer shows that she has a knack for making a dramatic plot out of ordinary objects and situations. The film’s sci-fi elements and low-key romantic plot contribute to mysteriously depicting the situation in which the main character reflects on his life while repeating his ordinary routine. It is heartwarming to follow this story, which tells us that every small moment in our life has the potential to be magical. (Jin PARK)
