Program Note
Three fantastic commotions about people who dream of suicide. Hanging Touch is an adventure of a high school girl who failed in her suicide attempt as she meets a school health nurse who is in conflict over her sexual identity, an abusive teacher showing compunction and a peer school boy who tries to explode the school. Fly, Chicken! begins with a policeman determined to kill himself having conversation with a hen he meet in a ocean side village. A beautiful woman, violent crime, and suicide impulse spread through the screen like a dream. The last story Happy Birthday is about an old man who is disappointed in friends for forgetting his birth. He decides to make his birthday meaningful and throws himself to the ocean to save a young man in danger. Each story directly deals with suicide reasons such as loneliness, corruption of society, and social prejudice and violence yet are not depressing keeping an optimistic point of view. The film pioneers an unusual way of producing and distributing an independent film starring main stream celebrities, and with a broadcasting company funding the project. (Hong Hyosook)
