In the prequel Big Girl, Little Girl and a Guy in Between-episode 1, JANG-CHA Hyun-sil raises a daughter with Down syndrome, and makes a living by drawing comic strips on women and disabilities. She marries SEO Dong-Il, a documentary director who is 7 years her junior. In Big Girl, Little Girl and a Guy in Between-episode 2, a three-year-old son is added to the rare family and their non-trivial daily happenings are openly captured on camera. The family members’ honest expressions of emotions bring laughter as well as tears. The family issues generalize to those that anyone can experience. Through the director’s own documentary of his family, he deals with major issues of Korean society issues such as the disabled, education, and discrimination against gender and age. Viewers can relate to how he examines the issues not objectively but as his personal problems. Also, through the narration in the director’s own voice, the audience can get closer and deeper into the lives of his family. (HONG Hyosook)
