Program Note
Bong-su (KIM Seung-ho) is a hardworking farmer, but his situation shows no sign of improving, no matter how diligently he toils. He has even postponed his daughter′s wedding several times because of financial strain. Bong-su sells his harvest but manages to lose all his earnings through gambling. Faced with the pressure of debt, he desperately sells the family calf, only to lose it all to a con man. After The Wedding Day, Kim had trouble finding leading roles, but his work in Money confirmed that he had the charisma to lead a film. The film′s portrayal of the realities of farmers was so bleak that it was discouraged from entering foreign film festivals. An instrumental entry in the line of Korean realism cinema, Money profoundly illustrated many of the issues that plagued farmers of the time: debt, gambling, and endless labor for little pay. The beauty of the mountains and rivers of the countryside only serve to underscore the farmers′ loneliness. (CHO Young-jung)
