Program Note

Sweet Dream is the oldest existing film in Korean history. But Ae-sun, the main character, is not a naive and conventional woman. Pursuing money and sexual desire, she abandons her family to shack up with her lover in a hotel. Upon realizing that he is a penniless imposter, however, she turns him over to the police and pursues a glamorous ballet dancer. This film provides an excellent opportunity to view Seoul in the mid-1930s, also to glimpse the elegant dancing of CHO Taek-won who was widely acknowledged as Korea’s greatest dancer. YANG Ju-nam

Yang was born in Seoul, and began to study film editing at the Kyung-sung Film Academy in 1932. In 1935, he worked as an assistant director in The Story of Chun-hyang, Korea’s first talkie. After debuting as a film director with Sweet Dream, he continued to work as a film recorder and editor. In 1957, he returned to directing features, including Jonggak (The Bell Tower) and Yearning (both 1958), his representative works. He continued working mostly as a film editor until his mid-60s.
