Chang-soo (KIM Seung-ho) is a teacher who lives with his wife and son in a rented house on the outskirts of Seoul. He has no talents other than teaching, a fact that his wife constantly laments. One day, he dreams of pigs, which is traditionally an auspicious sign amongst Koreans. Ever since that dream, fortune seems to come his way: a neighbor offers him a pig to raise, and a friend he hasn′t seen in a long time comes by with an opportunity to make big money. A Dream of Fortune is the signature film of HAN Hyung-mo, who was one of the most important directors of the 1950s. It is a social drama that expertly walks the line between comedy and tragedy. It is also a showcase for the talents of KIM Seung-ho and LEE Ye-chun, who were known as the best character actors of the time. Kim would go on to portray faithful and loving fathers, while Lee became known for darker roles, particularly as crime bosses. However, in this film, Kim and Lee play two friends who share their pain and hardship together. A young AHN Sung-ki, who would later continue the line of beloved, father-like actors after Kim, also makes an early appearance. (CHO Young-jung)
