Program Note
This documentary tells the appalling tale of sixteen prostitutes murdered in the city of Mashad. These ‘Spider Killings’ were committed by a 39-year-old man, who believed that his acts were righteous. He insisted that prostitutes were leeches, less than pigs or cows, and that he is the executioner of God’s will. Revolving around a prison interview with the murderer, the film examines the lives of the victims: A husband who forces his wife to become a sex worker, a prostitute who knows nothing about AIDS, and a child of a dead prostitute. Although one might claim that the film is too sensational, the subject matter is so overwhelming that such arguments become meaningless. The murder’s mother, wife, and son all claim his innocence, and he claims himself to be an anti-prostitution activist. (Nam Dong-chul)
