Program Note
In 2006 (two years after the prostitution prevention laws took effect), the film looks at how the prostitution business in Korea has changed and what the women are doing now. During the Japanese occupation, Wan-wol-dong used to be a dockyard, but now it is the biggest prostitute area in Busan. However, there are some women reaching out to the women there like the Abused Women’s Support Center volunteers and the women who started a marathon to ban prostitution. The film follows the women’s story after the prostitution prevention law. Although it could be a very controversial subject matter, the women’s stories and the volunteers’ struggle and fight against the world are carefully captured. It formally combines and embellishes the expressive detailed depictions as in an animation. Also, the director’s fight against those who are pro-prostitution can be clearly seen. (HONG Hyosook)
