Program Note
Lee Kyung-rock, a North Korean boy who has a longing for rock music, leaves his home to escape from North Korea. He crosses a river to China, successfully sneaks into the embassy of the Republic of Korea, and finally arrives in Seoul. At the training institute for Korean refugees, Kyung-rock expresses his desire to play in a rock band. But instead he is encouraged to learn carpentry to become a furniture factory laborer. This film clearly stands out by following the lonely journey of a boy who escaped North Korea for his strong yearning toward rock music ? set apart from existing films which describe the stereotype of Korean refugees: those escaping from hunger and indigence. As Kyung-rock faces the absurdities of real life, viewers can see another side of society that we call ‘the land of freedom’. (Hong Hyusook)
