Program Note
There are two children who study Pansori (Korean traditional song) in the film. They both started Pansori to realize the dreams their fathers could not fulfill. However, their reasons for continuing to learn Pansori are different. One boy learns from the top teachers with his father’s full support. He always questions his talent and continues studying Pansori to overcome his insecurities. The other boy learns Pansori from his drunk, wretched father and often gets swept up in violence. To him, Pansori is the shield that protects his relationship with his father, and is also a means of living. Lineage of the Voice is not a movie about genius talents or even Pansori. It is a story of two very different boys with one thing in common. The camera stays back in order to avoid evaluating or discriminating the two boys’ lives in their very different environments. Nonetheless, the boys’ dramatic lives are the main driving force of the film. (HONG Hyosook)
