Program Note
Set near the mouth of the Danube in northern Bulgaria, Belene is a city living in the shadow of horror. Located near a Communist-era concentration camp, the town’s dark legacy looms over everything and everyone as preparations for a nuclear future begin. The past intersects with the present and insinuates itself into the future in Belene, and also gives the film a context that is as disturbing as it is tragic. Foremost in everyone’s mind, however, is the mosquito problem; a priest, a piano tuner, a former mayor, and a pompom girl are among those that are looking forward at the same time as they look back with fear and loathing. Paounov’s latest initially recalls his absurdly wondrous Georgi and the Butterflies, but soon settles into a respectful witty examination of one town’s sinister history.
