Program Note
Her older sister, actress Sandrine, directed this sensitive, informative, and moving portrait of Sabine Bonnaire. For almost three decades, Sabine’s autism was undiagnosed, resulting in a disastrous five-year stint in a psychiatric institution. Bonnaire’s personal archives and home movies serve to crystallize Sabine’s shifting personality, and underscore the tragedy of the lack of resources and treatments. Contrary to popular belief, there are gaps in the French public health system that Her Name is Sabine highlights. The family footage eloquently describes and contrasts the “two” Sabines, pre- and post-institutionalization that are equally heartbreaking and infuriating. Bonnaire avoids the distancing tone of the medical documentary and makes clear the stresses of life-long chronic and demanding disorders can have on the family.
