Program Note
At any given time of year, the town of Wacken, in northern Germany, is a sedate farming village: Farmers boast about corn growth, and devout grandmothers sing in the choir. But for three days each summer, the Wacken Open Air disturbs the peace, and in doing so gives the tiny hamlet a sense of identity when tens of thousands of metal heads descend upon the small town for the singular music festival. The clash of cultures provides the amusing and curious look at how the two groups continue to coexist: WOA is almost 20 years old. In director CHO’s words, “What interested me most in the film and in the subject matter was how these two cultures, apparently so different from one another, came together. This is a recurring theme for me: what is one’s own and what is foreign? What happens when two cultures collide with one another?”
