Program Note
Alejandro Landes examines the geopolitics surrounding Evo Morales’ presidential campaign as well as the state of the farmer in this political and humanistic documentary. Morales was a socialist farmer whose 2005 run for the presidency of Bolivia (which he won) was fueled by disenfranchised, largely indigenous coca farmers. With the US War on Drugs threatening their livelihoods, Morales ran on an anti-American platform (like any socialist politicians in South America over the last few years), and helped to chronicle the plight of the rural poor in Bolivia. The powerful union of farmers that was created in response to the Bolivian government’s bending to US pressure, divisive though it was, is a reflection of an angry people and an exemplar of Latin American politics right now. As director Landes states, “Evo′s story mirrors the complexities of his country and its place in the world.”
