Filmmaker Jeanne is consumed with directing a difficult sex scene. Aided by her loyal AD, Jeanne is hell-bent on getting it right, without compromise or dishonesty. Sex Is Comedy takes the viewer into this faux-authentic sex shoot complete with giant fake penis, nerve-shattered cast and unflappable crew. But unlike other “behind-the-scenes” projects, this one isn’t intended to demystify the filmmaking process. Rather, the director wants to show that that mystery cannot be penetrated. “The heart remains a secret. Like the heart of the volcano. It’s the moment of the Ordeal, when the fear is the same for everyone - actor or director - and, at that point, the shoot becomes an inviolable closed set,” states Breillat. But she comments on more than cinema. This film about film allows her to meditate on the relation of sex and power: “the subtle bond between the one who obeys and the one who commands, ... the power of the weakest.”
