Program Note
The place: the not exactly happening city of Frankfurt/Oder, East Germany; the people: two couples in their late thirties, set in their ways, going nowhere. Radio host Chris and his second wife Katrin don’t have much to say to each other anymore, in or out of bed. Friend Uwe slaves away day and night in his hot-dog stall, forgetting his wife Ellen and their kids. Small surprise, then, that Ellen and Chris - who is urgently looking for change - become close. But when they’re caught in the act, everyone is shaken from their stupor. But the resulting crisis of relationships pushes the characters to move beyond their nagging fears about economic survival, to jump-start their stalled lives and create a small miracle. With Grill Point, as in his previous award-winning movies The Policewoman and Night Shapes, director Dresen adopts an almost documentary approach, having the actors improvise in the drab housing estates that serve as their setting.
