Program Note
In a small town in Anatolia, Turkey, Medine faces a problem. According to custom, her son must be circumcised and afterwards, they must invite guests to have roasted lamb. But her husband is unemployed. Meanwhile, Mert’s sister is jealous of all the attention Medine’s son is receiving and lies to him, telling him that if they can’t buy a lamb, he will have to be sacrificed instead. This is a film with beautiful pictures; the still shots of the picturesque mountain covered in snow, the mountains, the forest, and the waters harmonize with the characters moving within the frame. The film centers on the efforts to acquire a lamb, both by the poor couple trying to keep up appearances and by the boy who believes he will otherwise become a sacrifice. Interestingly, the boy is also called “Lamb” in the film, making it seem as though he could really be sacrificed. Will this family be saved? The innocence of the film is absorbing, and its outstanding plot and colors are provocative. It comes to Busan after having won the CICAE Art Cinema Award at the Berlin Film Festival. (RHEE Soue-won)
