Program Note
Dae-shik is the leader of a group of homeless people. One day, Suk-won, an ex-stock broker, who left his job after going bankrupt, joins the group. Dae-shik who is gay, falls in love with Suk-won at first sight, but hides his feelings from Suk-won, who is only preoccupied with escaping from his homeless state. Dae-shik, Suk-won, and a woman who is in love with Dae-shik, embark on a long but hopeless journey. The bleak, yet lyrical images highlighted through the rough texture of the screen, takes the film from a sad tale of a gay man in love to an elegy of a modern man who has lost love and a place called home. Hwang Jung-min gives an impressive performance as Dae-shik through unconstrained releases of emotion, evoking a sense of compassion. Furthermore, the cinematography that captures various spaces in Korea with unusually bleak touches is extraordinary.
