Program Note
Mostofa Farooki has made films following characters who have to make alternative choices in conflicts between inner order and society in films such as Third Person Singular Number(A Window on Asian Cinema, BIFF 2009) and Television(Closing Film, BIFF 2012). In Ant Story, living in a suburban slum with having a paper of diploma, young Mithu daydreams of success in Dhaka by marrying to a rich foreign woman to escape his shabby life. He eventually gets a job at a pyramid sales company and one day, he picks up a mobile phone belongs to a famous actress, then he begins blackmailing her with the videos stored in it. Farooki imperturbably depicts the process of the destruction of people whose happiness is a construct. The popular actress can’t even cook rice without her maid, and timid Mathu attracts investors for the fraudulent company without self-confidence. Both of them are indeed overwhelmed by fear and the fear eats their souls. In a society where social class rarely changes it is pitiful, if not appropriate, to condemn those who can’t be the real heroes of their stories. (PARK Sungho)
