Program Note
A film based in the northern province of India during 1971, Octave is a tale of a Pakistani couple in their 50s trying to survive during the complex political era. During this time, the Bangladeshi guerrillas, supported by the Indian government, engaged in a war for independence from Pakistan. The film begins when the two countries are at a point of possible mutual destruction. The husband Gopi is a doctor, and the wife Sati teaches Tibetan children. Sati is still struggling to erase the memory of their son, who died years ago. The story begins with a phone call, when a child asks if she is his mother. Sati tells him that he has called a wrong number, but the boy keeps calling. In the mean time, their other son, who is in the military, neglects to make his regular phone call. The couple is in a state of shock. Perhaps their son is also calling a wrong number, in search of his mother... (Nam Dong-chul)
