A poor and fat boy, Dong-goo OH believes himself to be female and dreams of becoming a perfect woman like Madonna. He saves up money for a sex change operation by doing hard jobs, only to use that to pay for damages by his father`s violence. One day he decides to join the Ssireum circle, hearing that the winner`s cash prize will be five million won in the high school Ssireum match, but it turns out to be a disaster. The coach does nothing but sleep, and the other members of the circle are terrible in Ssireum, with the exception of the captain. This film reminds us of several Japanese films which were popular in Korea such as [Shall We Dance?], [Sumo Do Sumo Don`]t, and [Water Boy] because it also describes the main characters` effort to achieve a small goal in a humorous and touching way. However, it presents a much wider view. It deals with the issues of gender and class setting up the main character as a poor transgender boy and his father as a helpless laborer unfairly dismissed. However, it is not the depth of the theme but the sense of humor and warm attitude towards the social minorities which is still alive in this complex narrative in spite of the weight of the theme, and this makes the film even more outstanding.
