Program Note
This is perhaps V.Shantaram`s finest work. At a time directors were still struggling to best utilise the advent of sound in India in 1931, Shantaram made such a sophisticated and daring film that shook society by the roots, but remains a landmark for its daring social reformist message, superb screenplay, visualisation, refined use of metaphor, corrosive humour to make profound points, and beautiful songs as well. He directed and photographed this film, and made it also in Marathi is Kunku. A sharply critical take on the institution of child marriage, it is the story of a poor orphan woman Nirmala (Shanta Apte), who is tricked by her greedy family into marrying a rich man Kakasaheb (Keshavrao Date) old enough to be her father. The film would be seen as remarkably daring even today, so imagine the shock waves it must have sent out in 1937. The film was made when Shantaram was still at Prabhat Studios and yet to branch out independently. Both the English titles are strange and hideous; the literal translation would be `The World Won`t Accept It.`
