Program Note
In late 1770, France is on the verge of the revolution. A country nobleman visits Versailles seeking the funds to drain the festering swamp back home. All he receives is icy treatment, until he meets the Marquis de Bellegarde. With his help, Malavoy gets a chance to pay court to the influential Countess de Blayac and infatuates her with his charm and wit. But Malavoy`s heart moves toward the young, innocent daughter of Bellegarde…
Patrice Leconte is a well known to Korean audience for his unique storytelling of love. Ridicule is a satirical period piece with touch of humor and witty critiques on the 18th century French aristocracy, and it made Leconte famous around the world. The film won awards for best director and best film of the year at Cesars. Performances by Fanny Ardant and Charles Berling are superb, and the film`s sophisticated representation invites us to the world of colorful, extravagant French salon.
