Program Note
This is an encyclopaedic documentary on V.Shantaram by his daughter Madhura Jasraj. While it follows the traditional, chronological long-winded format in telling his story, it is incredibly rich in its archival value, and tells the story of Indian cinema through V. Shantaram, one of its great pioneers and innovators, as his work spans most of a century, from 1921-1984. It has rich, insightful and entertaining clips from many of his films from Ayodhyecha Raja (1932), the fantastically mounted Amritmanthan (1934), Amar Jyoti, Duniya Na Mane, Shejari, Amar Bhoopali, Do Ankhen Barah Haath, Stree, Apna Desh, Pinjra, and more.
It is like an excellent (if somewhat tedious) guide to Indian cinema of the last century, as it covers his themes of social reform, political relations, musicals, dancicals, and more. It includes interviews with Satyajit Ray, Shyam Benegal and others on V. Shantaram`s contribution. The film is in English or has English voice overs for the most part.
