Program Note
Martin, an 11-year-old boy, lives in a rural French village with his disturbed family. His sick mother prefers stays in her own room avoiding her sons, and his brother falls into an alcoholic tailspin. Martin`s father, still under severe maternal control, has no power to put his dysfunctional family back on the right track. With consolation from a cat and Malika, the family`s housekeeper, he tries to help the family, only to face a worse situation.
[Demented] is the second feature film by prominent new French director Laurent, who has been consistently looking deeply into the subjects of family, adolescence and difference since his feature debut, More Than Yesterday (1998). The film experimentally explores crisis and destruction of a family from an 11-year-old boy`s point of view and through his inner monologues. It won the Best Director Award at the 2006 Locarno International Film Festival.
