In 1943, at the peak of WWII, Said ? from the Algerian countryside ? enlists to fight for France, the mother nation that he has never seen. At training camp, he meets other Maghreb `brothers` including Messaoud, Abdelkader and Yassir, each of who enlisted for different reasons. They belong to the Northern African squad under the command of Master Sergeant Martinez. France is liberated owing in part to the Northern African squad`s triumphs in Italy, Provence and Vosges, but their patriotism is ignored, and the fantasy of France for Said and his brothers is shattered when they are treated cruelly, discriminated against, and lied to. Rachid Boucharreb, an Algerian filmmaker, successfully reveals the hidden side of modern French history.
