Program Note
On her birthday, Jeanne, an actress, hears a secret from her mother about how she met her father on a trip to India, and that he is a Hindu Untouchable. Jeanne takes a role that she once rejected in order to take a journey to India; she chooses it over participation in a film production of Jean of Arc at the Abattoir ? directed by her boyfriend. Aside from the money, she is never happy with her film roles, and she leaps at the chance to finally meet her father in India. Jeanne`s journey to India to search for her father is an exploration of her identity and reconciliation with herself as well. At the beginning of the film, a mental crisis was caused by the knowledge of her mixed racial ancestry in conflict with her work as an actress. Theatrical yet realistic, the film uses untempered editing and handheld camera that vividly captures actors` performances. Isild Le Besco performance won the Marcello Mastroianni Award at the 2006 Venice Film Festival. (Rhee Soue-won)
