Program Note
Three old men suddenly hop into an old car and head out on a trip. Jobless and filled with memories, the three old men embark on a journey for the sake of one’s hometown, one’s lost love, and for friendship. To make money for the trip, the men perform traditional Iranian music and a puppet show, looking forward to what they hope will be an exciting adventure. It turns out to be a continuation of their daily lives and a reminder of their lost memories. What makes Journey of the Gray Men interesting is not in the journey itself, rather, the process of making the film. The film crew suddenly appears during the film, and the actors start deviating from the director’s instructions to make the film themselves. For instance, when a group of gangsters attack the actors, all the crew members suddenly hide behind the screen and the actors start to argue about whether they are acting or if they are having a casual conversation. In other words, the film is a union of fiction and documentary, where the audience becomes much more involved with the film and the actors. In this way, the director’s message and the sincerity of the actors come across to the audience. (Kang So-won)
