Program Note
One of the most profound moments of Romanian history occurred when dictator Nicolae Ceasescu was driven from office in 1989. In first-time filmmaker Corneliu Porumboiu`s comedy, part time Santa Claus Piscoci, hung over history teacher Manescu and arrogant TV host Jderescu take part in a commemorative talk show discussion on the revolution`s anniversary. While each presents his own version of events, and what revolutionary activities he took part in the small town, viewers begin to call in with contradictory stories. Against the backdrop of a post-Communist Romania, the veracity of the men`s memories is challenged, though in a typical, absurdly humorous eastern European way. Thoroughly believing their own tales as they do, the fluidity of memory is explored, as is the ability for a person to be at odds with their own pasts.
