Program Note
In 1999, the year before the millennium, Hei-shu, a long-term unemployed man, finally gets a job in a local musical band performing at funerals and weddings. One day, Hei-shu’s cat is missing. At about the same time, a new neighbor moves into an apartment upstairs. Hei-shu still opens the can of food for the cat every morning as he strongly believes that his cat will come back some day. He later suspects that the cat has turned into a woman called Yokulut. A ‘Japanese culture buff’, Hei-shu believes he was a Japanese named ‘Tetsuo’, the character from a very popular Japanese comic, in his previous life. Sometimes he talks with his idol, Gao, a female news anchor who warns him on TV to beware of the government’s conspiracy. One day, lost between reality and fantasy, Hei-shu finds his life unfolding in an unexpected way. The second feature film from director Mi-sen Wu, whose feature debut, Fluffy Rhapsody, was presented in the New Currents section in the 5th PIFF. (Production Notes)
