Program Note
Mexican City`s Periferico freeway is an exemplar of modern superstructures and large-scale infrastructure construction. But works like it still require human labor, and this documentary takes a look at the often-neglected contribution of the worker; it`s less a study in feats of engineering as it is an examination of what makes some people choose to carry out the work. In the filth and amid the inherent danger, filmmaker Juan Carlos Rulfo juxtaposes beautiful images of the second deck of the super-road as it goes up, from the dank pits around the foundations to the columns that soar above them. Following a small crew over the course of almost two years, Rulfo also unearths some of the common ideas Mexicans hold about themselves and their nation. Rulfo`s camera refrains from judgment of the workers` practices, forcing viewers to draw conclusions of their own. A remarkable work of non-fiction cinema.
