Program Note
Marta, Sebastian and Jozef are virtual strangers to one another, simultaneously heroic and utterly regular. The one thing they have in common is a desperate need for money with which to fulfill their dreams. Each goes to extremes to reach their goal, while always maintaining a sense of honor, pride and dignity. During a hot July in a Silesian city impacted by war, poverty and filth, the lives of the three play out in three short stories, and vividly illustrate their struggles. In the follow-up to his 2001 feature Silence, the fast-emerging Rosa revisits some of the terrain of that film as well as his earlier work: once again he focuses on very ordinary people struggling to escape the station in life that they`re trapped at, and doing so with a blind determination that borders on recklessness.
