Program Note
[A Soap] is a tragic-comic revisionist soap opera, largely set in a single apartment building. The drama begins when Charlotte dumps her boyfriend and moves into an apartment upstairs from Veronica, a transsexual. Initially leading very separate, independent lives, tragic circumstances conspire to bring them together. Christensen`s tale of the disparate characters - also factoring in the story are Veronica`s mother and Charlotte`s ex-boyfriend Kristian - is told with the stark simplicity of a near-Dogme style as well as the amusingly familiar elements of the daytime serial, replete with cliffhangers, recaps and narration. Recalling Pedro Almodovar and American network serials in equal measure, Christensen avoids overwrought sentimentality to paint a portrait of two emotionally delicate people forging a bond, deftly managing to keep the tone just light enough to find the humor and hope in the women`s complicated lives.
