Program Note
Mixing interviews with dramatic, gritty DV recreations, the film chronicles the two years three British Muslim men - Shafiq, Ruhel and Asif - spent in the US`s notorious Guantanamo Bay prison facility. In Karachi for a friend`s wedding, the boys get arrested after taking a misguided trip to Afghanistan on the eve of the American offensive against the Taliban. For two years at Gitmo, they`re humiliated, falsely accused and physically and psychologically tortured as an exercise in the War on Terror. In the wake of other military prison scandals, [The Road To Guantanamo] is both timely and gripping. The extra-Geneva treatment the Tipton Three receive is infuriating, and though relentless, Winterbottom never allows the film to stray into sensationalism.
