[Love Sick] could be one of the few films ever made wherein the romantic couples of the story exist free of angst and latent guilt. Familial connections and sexual orientation take a back seat to emotions and the messy, complicated nature of them. Pragmatic Alex and brash Kiki are two Bucharest University students living in the same house. Over the course of time, their relationship evolves from one of simple friendship to a more complex romantic one. Things become even more knotty when Kiki`s brother Sandu puts in an appearance and jealousy, on Sandu`s part, rears its ugly head. Things take a turn for the better during the summer at Alex`s family home in the country… until Sandu turns up again. Ioana Barbu and Maria Popistasu deliver nuanced, bittersweet performances laced with offbeat humor, and create characters that are not only complete, but empathetic as well.
