Program Note
Based on a story by Raymond Carver, [Jindabyne] is a typically layered emotional study of people at a moral crossroads from acclaimed filmmaker Ray Lawrence. While on a fishing trip, Stewart and his friends discover the dead body of an Aboriginal woman, and not wanting to spoil the weekend, the men agree to wait until Sunday to report it. When they finally do, the small town they live in as well as the men`s wives are unanimous in their condemnation of such irresponsibility. The morality and callousness of the friends` actions is played out in Stewart and Claire`s disintegrating marriage, with Stewart unable to see what he did wrong, and Claire`s faith in her husband being shaken to the core. Against the arid, dusty landscape, the friends` inaction has profound ramifications that they could never have imagined, rattling personal relationships and bringing racial tensions to the core.
