Program Note
Three women from the former Yugoslavia are the central figures in Andrea Staka`s nuanced look at survival and generational misunderstanding. The rigid Ruza is 50, originally from Serbia, and owns a canteen in Zurich where she lives, her sole concern making money. Mila, 60, works for her, and her dream is to earn enough to complete a house in her Croatian home. And Ana is a beautiful, impulsive 22-year-old from Sarajevo who comes to work at the diner. Slow friendships build between Ana, Ruza and Mila, though lingering hostilities make it difficult. The Golden Leopard winner explores issues of nationality and what creates it, and the coping mechanisms of immigrants - ranging from hyper-efficiency to near- recklessness while always avoiding simplistic sentimentality.
