Program Note
In 1906, Upton Sinclair scandalized the meatpacking industry with his shocking expose, [The Jungle]. In 2001, Eric Schlosser did much the same thing, in the process pointing out that nothing`s really changed. In the wake of a string of books and films that portray the negative effects of our convenient, modern diets, such as [Fatland] and [Super Size Me], Richard Linklater has fashioned a narrative version of Schlosser`s non-fiction bestseller. In Cody, Colorado, a local Mickey`s outlet is having great success with its new burger - until it`s discovered there`s something wrong with the meat. The film touches on issues of politics, health and ethics to shed light on the far-reaching impact real chains like Mickey`s are having on us all.
